Newborn Maremma Sheepdog Puppies…
It all begins with a twinkle…
On average (after conception), a mother dog is pregnant for approximately 9 weeks (63 days).
Puppies are born inside a gestational sack. They take their first breath when this sack is removed. They make adorable little sounds.
Maremma Sheepdog puppies are born with no pigmentation in their skin, paws, nose or eyes. They have limited senses, their eyes and ears closed, they can smell and commando crawl. This allows them to survive and find their mothers milk.
In the early days the pups eat and sleep. The mother dog constantly cleans the puppies and she rarely leaves their sides. They open their eyes between day 10 to 14, hearing is the last sense to develop, at around 3 weeks old.
It does not take long for the puppies to start playing and wresting with each other.
Here are a collection of videos and photos of Demeter’s and Hercules’s litter from January 2022.
